I need pictures to capture memories, because my brain doesn't.

Chris’s 28th Bday

with 2 comments

To celebrate her ajumahood this year, Chris wanted to go to Napa and check out some wineries.  This was my third trip to wine country since our move last August so I was a bit  hesitant, but to my surprise it turned out to be a great trip.  I’m a bit tired so I’ll let the pictures do the talking.

Half Moon Bay

with 3 comments

Chris and I didn’t have anything planned this Memorial Day so we decided to drive down PCH to check out Half Moon Bay.  I heard it was beautiful and has amazing seafood, not to mention its only 40 minutes away.

We happened upon a small antique shop downtown, not really much there to photograph but this caught my eye.

I like how this sign looks like it’s been there forever, but you can still see the marks from the suction cupped sign that was there previously.  I tried to give it a retro feel but then I realized there’s a 2006 Honda Civic in the background.  FAIL

This is completely random but I saw Mike Chon’s twin fishing in Half Moon Bay.

The resemblance is uncanny.  They even have the same jacket.

Ok, probably won’t be happy about me posting this close up.  I think its cute, maybe a little bloated from a salty dinner the night before but still cute.

That’s all for now, we’re heading to NYC this weekend so hopefully I’ll get a chance to snap some post-worthy pics!

The Haight

Haight-Ashbury

Haight-Ashbury

Chris and I have been in San Francisco for over 6 months now and although we try to make a conscious effort to experience the city there’s still so much that we haven’t seen.  On Saturday we spent a few hours walking around a neighborhood called The Haight which is the hippiest area in SF.  I’m sure it’s nowhere near what it was back in the 60’s and 70’s but you can probably still get a contact high from walking down Haight St. One thing that struck me about The Haight was the sheer number of young homeless kids on the street.  Being a resident of SF I’m used to homeless people but usually they’re either decrepit or mentally insane.  It was strange seeing teenagers begging for change.  Out of respect for them I didn’t snap any pictures but that’s just a quick description of what I experienced during the walk.

In addition to the shops that sell your expected touristy gear there was some decent shopping.  The Haight seemed to have an abundance of skaters so a lot of the stores were geared toward that style of skinny jeans sagged below the ass with a metal studded black belt and Vans Chukkas.  Not exactly my style but one sneaker store caught my eye with this L.A. Gear display in the front window.  I remember having a pair when I was in like 2nd grade and thought they were sick.  Known for the gills on the side and dual laces of different colors (this pair doesn’t have them, sad) they were pretty popular when I was a kid growing up in Chicago.

Beverly is the most beautiful pitbull I’ve ever seen.  She was tied up outside of the restaurant that we ate at and I had to snap a few quick pics of her.  She’s a 10 month old half blue nose, half brindle pitbull and she’s absolutely calm and gentle.  Her owner was saying how pitbulls naturally aren’t aggressive dogs but they’re so loyal that they’ll do whatever the owner tells them to do, which is why they make such good fighting dogs.  That and being pure ripped muscle helps too.

We had lunch at a place called Magnolia’s that had the best burger I’ve had since I moved out west.  They also brew their own beer downstairs and had some excellent homemade mustard.  Definitely worth checking out.

During our meal I looked up and saw Beverly’s owner outside brawling with a homeless hippy guy.  We never found out what exactly happened but I like to think the homeless guy tried to hurt Bev and the dude just started swinging to protect his pitbull.  Probably not but the hippy ended up getting arrested.

Graf Poem

I didn’t read this until I got home and blew it up on my computer but it says:

“When you die where you gonna go, Heaven or Hell?  Time will tell, that’s why I gotta yell from the city streets to the rooftops.  Like it or not revelation’s comin non stop, take hede to this thought cause you might not make it on through.  Many are the called, chosen are the few.  Choose this day, which one are (you) can gain the whole world and lose your soul, is that really what you want to do?  Jesus speaks in dreams.”

CAS

with 2 comments

Our buddy Mijin was in town this past weekend paying us a visit from the Chi.  On Saturday we went to check out the California Academy of Sciences to try and culture ourselves (and test out my new Canon 17-55mm f/2.8 IS lens).

It was a tough trying to take sharp pics indoors without a flash.  Luckily my new lens performed well in low light.  The f/2.8 is worth the extra cost and the image stabilization really made a difference especially since all of my pics were hand held.

Only 2 posts and I’ve already posted pics of 2 starfish.

So I’ve decided to take Irwin’s advice and create a wordpress account to start blogging about my new hobby.  Facebook isn’t always to best outlet for pictures so I figured this would be a great way for people to see my pictures and my progress as I gain more experience behind the camera.

A few weeks ago Chris and I went to check out San Francisco’s Presidio because I figured that it would be a great place to practice with my new camera.

Golden Gate Bridge

Sure the Golden Gate bridge is the most cliche picture you can take in the city but why not?

These were taken with my 18-55mm kit lens.  As you can tell the DOF isn’t the greatest considering these were taken wide open but I think the pics still came out alright.

Starfish

While we were walking around the presidio we walked onto a pier where some people were fishing.  A gentleman who was crabbing happened to pull in this starfish right as we walked by so I snapped a picture.

Mist

As we were walking back to shore on the pier I saw this and knew it would make a great pic.

I know I’m new at this and I’m probably breaking every rule to post processing but thats the point of this blog, to see my progression as an amateur photographer.  Thats it for now, any feedback would be appreciated.
